BC: Trying to Fix the AGLG

Author: 2015/06/08

Late Friday, the BC Government rolled out some changes to the beleaguered Auditor General for Local Government office to try and salvage what should be an important protection for taxpayers.

You’ll recall the CTF was a big supporter of the launch of the AGLG, but was also the first to sound the alarm at their lack of progress, when then-AGLG Basia Ruta could only muster one report after nearly three years and millions in spending.

The Province announced Friday that the AGLG would be more clearly positioned like the BC Auditor General but also report to the Audit Council more regularly, two positive changes.

But let’s be clear: the best way to make the AGLG office better is to hire the right AGLG. Ruta didn’t work out and clearly had little understanding of local government in B.C. Whoever succeeds her needs to understand the rules of local government and the nature of all these municipalities.

In this case, the real fix might be as easy as finding the right person.
